The Commissioner(German: Kommissar) of the New York Police Department (NYPD) is the highest-ranking officer of the NYPD. Appointed by the Mayor of New York City, the Commissioner is the NYPD's chief executive officer, responsible for policing the Capital of the Imperial American Protectorate, New York City.
History
The title of Commissioner of the NYPD dates back to the 1800s with the Board of Commissioners. Following the capitulation of the United States, the Council of New York enacted the Municipal Police Act, providing for the New York Police Department and defining its leadership, duties, and powers within the Capital of the Protectorate.
