Introduction
The Reichstag, also called the Imperial Diet, was the main elected body in the Empire. It comprises 410 seats, 236 elected seats for Prussia and 174 unelected seats appointed by the Kaiser. Composition and Organization
There are currently twelve subdivisions for the Reichstag:
The below four subdivisions are grouped together as 'Prussia', and are the only elected parts;
- Brandenburg
- Hannover
- Westfalen
- Rhineland
The remaining eight are unelected;
- Bavaria
- Saxony
- Wurttemberg and Baden
- Thuringian States
- Hesse and Mecklenburg
- Hansa Cities and Oldenburg
- Salzburg
- Brunswick and Alsace-Lorraine
Role in Imperial Germany
The Reichstag previously had significant power, as they were the only body able to create law. The Consul of the German Party Administration is its President, able to select the Vice President (usually the Vice Consul) and the Sergeant-at-Arms (usually the chief of the Deutsches Volkswachter. However, due to inactivity and disuse, the ability to create law was shifted to the Realm Cabinet. However, the Reichstag still maintains the abilities to review and overturn laws from the Cabinet, as long as they do so within 24 hours.
